Issues Regarding Routers

It seems that many cool features, such as remote
assistance, Messenger WhiteBoard and Voice conversation
to name a few, do not work when the parties involved are
behind a router (different routers, that is.....I have no
problems connecting these with the guy in the next room
who's behind the same router).

I can't imagine that MS just missed this. Is there some
config setting that I can't find?

Greetings Ed,

MS didn't miss this -- all the functions you've mentioned work when the router supports
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Unfortunately currently only the residential router market
has embraced UPnP, with corporate solutions [I assume that's what you're referring to] not
including the feature (there are some legitimate reasons for not doing so). If you are just
behind a typical residential router (say a Linksys BEFSR41 or BEFSR81), the firmware in the
router will just need to be upgraded to a newer version that supports UPnP.

With UPnP installed in the router, Messenger will automatically open and forward the proper
ports for all these services to function and as such, there's absolutely no configuration
involved.

why you always refering to linksys...? there are other routers out there....
Gives us a list of what routers will work with Messenger...
Mine is a Belkin, works great until I get to send or receive a file, managed
video no problem once but audio... nahhhh, pretty awfull when ya need to
yahoo audio and video messenger msn......
With all the technologie ya'd think these prog's would work right.... but
supposed seeing how Symantec screwed the 2004 series.... they prob blame
that on xp to!

Hi,

I use Linksys as an example, as they're [one of] the most popular brands around and most
people are familiar with them.

Unfortunately my own personal list is somewhat out of date, but includes vendors like
Netgear, SMC, D-Link, and Solwise.
