Unable to install sp2

In downloading sp2 from the MS website or CD, the installation stops and
shows the following:

"error copying file XMLP_WP.XDR
error occured while copyingfile XMLP_WP.XDR
cannot copy file to destination directory
click retry or cancel

Service Pack 2 incomplete
Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly"

I am running XP Pro and have had no problems before or after attempting to
download SP 2.

I am at a loss-- any ideas?

I have a similar SP2 install problem when I try to install using SP2 download
or disk, it stops responding when I get to "Backing Up Files/Backing Up
Registry". This is on a SONY PCV-Rx670 VAIO with XP Home. All previous
updates were installed on this machine. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem when I try to install using SP2 download or disk, it
stops responding when I get to "Backing Up Files/Backing Up Registry". This
