View Full Version : Downloading updates without downloading SP2

-- I have a question hopefully some one can answer. My friend still has XP
SP1.
We do not want to put SP2 on her computer until we get the recovery disk in
case something would happen where we would have to restore her operating
system. Is there anyway that we can still get updates without downloading
SP2? She has a dial up and it would take to long to download. If there is a
way to download the updates without SP2 downloading along with it, please
advise the steps we need to take to do it. Tia.

Yes, there is a tool kit to disable SP2 but still get other updates. It
works through April, 2005, and can be reversed:
Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC Through
Automatic Updates and Windows

Enable Delivery of SP2

Wayne,

When on Windows Update site -- select the link "Administrator option" at
the left, then on 'Administrator Options' page select 'Windows Update
Catalog' link of the first paragraph on the right side.

When 'Welcome to Windows Update Catalog' page will be loaded --
select 'Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems' link at
the right. On the next page select 'Windows XP SP1' and press 'Search'
button.

Rock, thank you so much for this information. I had heard about this sometime
back but I had forgot about it until you reminded me. Thank you again and
have a happy and prosperous new year.

Thanks Mikhail for your input into my question. I will definitely check it
out. I will assume that this info. will allow me to download the updates to a
computer without installing SP2. Have a good new year.

Could I use custom install and install all the critical updates and be able
to keep SP2 from downloading? I have never used this one before.

Yes, you can. And here you can hide the updates you don't want to
install (but you must have ponderable reasons to do that); you can
unhide such hidden updates at ay time.

But Rock's suggestion is useful in this case, too: it will not allow
WinXP-SP1 detect, that such update as SP2 even exists.
