View Full Version : WM5 available features when running on W2K

At TechEd 2003, a slide in "MSG340 - Exchange IM Migration To Microsoft
Office Real-Time Communications Server 2003" documents that "Whiteboard" and
"App Sharing" work on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP platforms with
Windows Messenger 5.0. Isn't that erroneous? I thought Whiteboard and App
Sharing were features exclusive to Windows XP?

That same slide lists Voice, Presence, File Transfer, Acoustic Echo
Cancellation, and Video as features of WM5. It says that Acoustic Echo
Cancellation and Video are *not* compatible with Windows 2000. Is that
correct? I thought video was do-able with Windows 2000 and WM5.

What is Acoustic Echo Cancellation anyway?

Hi Chris,

They are exclusive to Windows XP -- to a point. A Windows Messenger 5 user on either OS can
initiate Netmeeting (yes I know you know how to do that via registry, and the issue you found
with regards to policies) and then use the Whiteboard/Application Sharing feature with
Netmeeting itself (they are exactly the same).

Video isn't doable unfortunately -- it's limited to Windows XP only.

Acoustic Echo Cancellation is a feature which "cancels" the echo of yourself that you hear
from the other side while in a voice conversation. Although in corporate scenarios, it's not
even that noticeable (due to the speed of the connection), but on the general Internet, where
it can take a noticeable second or two for your audio to reach the destination, you can hear
the "echo" of exactly what you say as it plays on your contacts' speakers. The cancellation
feature "remembers" what you just sent and then "cancels" it if it comes back (that's the
concise version). Of course, if headsets/headphones are being used, this isn't an issue, but
most people typically use Messenger/VoIP as a speakerphone, where this problem resides.

Hi Chris,

Sorry, I've been corrected. Whiteboard/Application Sharing *IS* available in Windows 2000,
but you need to have Service Pack 4 installed.

Interesting; thanks. NetMeeting isn't included with WXP, is it? So isn't
Whiteboard/Application Sharing a different technology in WXP? If so, how
does W2K SP4 initiate Whiteboard/Application Sharing? Through something
other than NetMeeting?

Or is it just that Whiteboard and Application Sharing become visible on the
WM5 menu for W2K SP4?

Hi Chris,

Netmeeting is in XP (just doesn't have an icon), it's startable by clicking Start, then Run,
entering conf and clicking OK.

Exactly, the options "appear" just like under XP when Win2k SP4 is installed.

So IOW, the DisableCollaborationApps setting becomes observed in Win2K SP4?

This probably has repercussions, as the visibility of NetMeeting links
likely become dependent upon the DisableCollaborationApps setting; i.e., if
collaborative apps are disabled, the NetMeeting links disappear--just like
WinXP. This is an important support issue for mixed OS environments that
rely upon NetMeeting.

Let me correct you before you confirm my last statement. ;^)

It appears that Win2K continues to display the NetMeeting links even if
DisableCollaborationApps is enabled. So in Win2K, NetMeeting is not
considered a 'collaborative application', and it's visibility is solely
dependent upon the DisableNM setting. This differs from WinXP.
