Hi, I've been using MSN Messgr. 6.0 for a while now. Today, I
upgraded to 6.1 and now it won't let me on the service. I get the
message:
"We were unable to sign you in to .NET MEssenger Service, possibly
because of a problem with the sercie or with your Internet connection.
Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301"
Under the help menu, it says the service is working fine. I also have
a net connection, otherwise I wouldn't be here typing (and I was just
using 6.0 30 minutes ago before this happened). I've restarted the
computer, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program (re d/l from
microsoft) and nothing is working. Any ideas out there? Can I get
6.0 back from somewhere? Thanks for any help.

Hi !
chances are that you are runnig a firewall other than the one included with
xp.
i had this problem yesterday and found it was my firewall (norton internet
security) that blocked access to the internet to the new messenger...
All you have to do is to go in the settings of the firewall, find the
messenger program in the list and allow it to connect.
Hope it helps !
have a nice day

Thanks for the tip! Apparently it was my Zone Alarm blocking the
program. But I never even thought to check that, because ZA isn't
even running in the taskbar. Is it running in the background even
though it isn't open in the taskbar (I never started it up)??
I went in to the program allow list and checked off messenger and
voila! Can someone explain to me though why it would do that when it
isn't running...or is it?
Thanks all!
