Taskbar icons are not visible after boot

Upon booting into the XP Pro all the taskbar icons are
not visible. They are functioning and in the task manager
but just not visible (Volume, Mouse, etc). Upon logging
out and logging back in they are now visible. This is
tedious. What is the problem?

I have recreate a brand new user and deleted the old user
profile and still the same problem. Help!

1. Wrong newsgroup, try microsoft.public.<your OS>
2. Assuming you're in XP, does clicking the left arrow next to the icons
(may or may not be there) show them?

You aren't imagining things. The icons in XP's tray area (now called the
Notification Area) will go missing now and then. Logging off/logging on
is about the best medicine.

Also, MVP Kelly Theriot has noted that accounts that use autologon tend
to show this problem more often. Adding a password to the account and
using the Welcome screen *might* not eliminate the problem but should
minimize it.

Are you lost or something? The original poster asked a general question
about XP's UI in an XP basic newsgroup. That choice sure looks like the
"right" newsgroup to me.

I have a similar problem. I am running xp home and suddenly my inactive
icons are never hidden. I have tried unchecking hide inactive icons and
then rechecking it. Any suggestions?

After resetting the "hide inactive icons" feature in Taskbar Properties,
it can take a bit of time before this works as expected once again.
Sometimes it will snap back in a few hours but it is possible for this
to take a few days too.

Besides waiting, there must be at least one tray item set to "Hide When
Inactive." Check settings for each tray icon in Taskbar properties.
Click the Customize button on the Taskbar page of Taskbar and StartMenu
properties screen. Then click on the "Behavior" of each item to cause
the drop down list of options to appears. Adjust as desired.

If you continue to have problems with getting this feature to work, a
tip from MVP Kelly Theriot may help: try setting the first icon in the
tray area to "Always Hide."
