DVD quit playing, said I needed to down load a decoder
that didn't help. Always get an error message asking me to
report to Microsoft I've sent in report a dozen times but
it hasn't helped. ???????

Certainly not related to windows update. Try something, anything else. Not
quite sure where this goes, but not here. Try microsoft.public.<your OS> or
do a search for the maker of your DVD player, decoder, or program.

Probably most relevant newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player

Ah, I see what happened. You took a wrong turn on the way to the Windows
Update newsgroups and ended up in the XP basic newsgroup. Don't ya hate
when that happens?

FYI..The "Send Error" is mainly for microsofts benefit. So they have
an idea what hardware/sofware consistently have problems so they can
try to get them solved before the next SP or OS is released. If you're
lucky, They might have an answer for you ( even if it's "We're aware
of the problem and working on it". But, You usually don't receive
anything.
