windows messenger

I have windows xp and am finding that whenever I log on to
aol that windows messenger keeps pestering me telling me
to upgrade which I did by contacting microsoft and
downloading but the windows messenger keeps on coming up
even though I have disabled it why is this could it be a
virus?
