Windows XP PRO 2002 with SP2

I have WIN XP PRO with SP2. This software seems to install in one go. The
trouble is that I have just upgraded the PC and now have a prescott
processor. This now means I have a problem where I cannot boot the PC because
of the issues with Prescott chips and SP2. Does any one know of any way to
stop SP2 installing with the windows installation??. I have tried flashing
the bios with the latest version and it has made no difference the PC still
hangs. I can't apply the patch as listed on this site as I need be in windows
to do it. I would like to able to do a clean install without the SP2 then
apply the patch and then install SP2. Any ideas !!

Why on earth would you upgrade to a prescott knowing what you know about them
and winxp?

Hi

This is one way to do it:

From another computer, download the updated Update.sys available in
the link below and copy it to a floppy disk or a CD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b99c199-5d75-454f-ae07-b620727be8d8&DisplayLang=en

Then install your OS (with SP2). When the computer crashes, go into
the BIOS and disable the Level 1 and Level 2 cache (this will stop
the crashing, but will leave the system running very slowly).

You can now finish the OS installation and then install the Update.sys
hotfix. After the hotfix is installed, you can enable the Level 1 and
Level 2 cache again.

I found out the issues after I had brought the PROC. Ah well you live and
learn. Sometimes the wrong way but as long as you learn from it..hehehe

Thanks for the advice. I will try this when I get home tonight. Do you know
if there would be an affect if I have not done a clean install?. I have just
brought the new board and processor and just swapped the HDD over and not
reformatted it?

You will have to do a repair install so as to force Windows XP activation
control to recognise the new motherboard. However, if you had a OEM version
of XP installed, you can not replace the motherbaord or move the hard drive,
as per the End-User License Agreement (EULA).

For you information: If you have the XP Pro install CD that has SP2
installed into it, then SP2 is not installed as a separate product. SP2
replaces XP files so it will install the updated files.

Hi Yves,

I have a Full XP PRO licence. I will try a fresh install tonight and see if
that works. The guy at ABIT (my new mother board) reckons if I have the
latest BIOS (which I have) this should be compatible and that if I do a clean
install this should cure the problem. I will let you know.

Or you could plug the hard drive back into the old motherboard/proc, and get
the update installed from Windows Update, then swap it back.
