View Full Version : No audio in 6.1

have waited for MSN Messenger version 6.1 in the hope that I would get the
voice feature back from version 6.0. I only connect with my sister via
Messenger and we both have version 6.1. We also are both running Windows
XP. We have the standard Windows XP firewall protection activated. Neither
of us is on a network. We both use a dial-up ISP. We can connect our video
cameras and have the text messaging feature working. It is the voice that
we are missing.

Every time we try to start a voice conversation we get the "cannot connect"
message. The audio feature simply never gets up and running. It didn't in
version 6.0 and it doesn't in 6.1.

We both have plenty of horsepower on our computers. They are both fast and
full of memory. Is there any hope that the voice feature in MSN Messenger
can be activated. Both my sister and I are old and neither of us have what
I would call "advanced" computer skills. We really want to be able to
converse via the Internet. Can anyone help? Please....

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I have exactly the same issue. You see 'Connecting to xxx...' for about 30
seconds and then it ends.

This is with both ends of the conversation on Broadband connections, UPnP
NAT router and I've checked with my ISP who is not using NAT on my
connection etc. As with the previous message, video works fine.

My advice is, until some kind soul posts an answer that resolves this
problem, try Yahoo Messenger. It seems to work much more reliably than MSN
Messenger. Make sure you do the audio tuning wizard before you start, as it
will help.

But if anyone has a solution to the MSN Messenger voice problem I'd love to
hear it, as when MSN Messenger was working in the past (pre 6.1 I think) the
quality was very good.

I had the same problem and discovered that my uPnP was disabled in my
LinkSys router. By enabling it the problem was resolved. Notice also that if
you are using a software firewall (I'm using Zone Alarm Pro), you have to
lower the firewall setting in the Internet Zone to medium to establish the
voice connection. I typically lower it only while establishing the
connection then raise it again immediately. Raising it doesn't seem to
affect the ongoing conversation once it is established.

Hope this helps.
