We have received two computers preinstalled with WinXP PRO SP2. The
government installation we are on has decreed no SP2 until more testing
is done. There is no uninstall available for SP2 in the Add/Remove
applet. How can I revert to SP1 on these machines?

Unfortunately, if the computers were preinstalled with SP2 (meaning
SP2-upgraded files were used for the install), then it won't be possible to
remove. If SP2 was installed after, check to see whether you can do the
following:

Click Start
Click Run
In the Open textbox type:
c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuni nst.exe
Click OK

Hi

You won't be able to. Only way would be to reformat the hard disk/partition
and then install SP1. If the PCs are new, that may very well invalidate any
warranty.

You can revert to Windows XP SP1 if you do the following. However this
requires that you either have a Volume License or separate Windows XP
Professional (original or with SP1) version Licenses for each computer.

Boot with the Windows XP Pro (original or with SP1 imbedded) on the computer
and perform a Repair Install. This will remove SP2. If you need instructions
look for How To Run A Repair Install here
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

If you require a full download of SP1 you can get it here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx
If you have copies of Windows XP Pro original version (2600) you can
slipstream SP1 making the process a bit faster

Are you sure the decree doesn't concern applying the Service Pack 2 to
existing machines?
I can't see any reason a new system with SP2 would be a problem. You should
clarify this with your IT department.
