I just tried enabling the activex controls and plug-ins and set the Java VM
to Medium security and I was able to get this pop-up for posting msgs in this
site which I was not able to before. But there is another site which I go to
for our office emails that I still get the pop-up block msg whenever I try to
compose a new email. I am able to bypass it by hitting the CTRL key. I have
a win xp with sp2 and IE6.

Forget what I just said about enabling the activex helping me to enable a
pop-up. It still doesn't work. I still can't open the pop-up for posting a
question but I am able to post replies.

Hi gp :-)

What firewall are you using? What kind of pop-up windows are you seeing?
Is it like a dialog box with an error message on it? If so, what is the
exact wording?

You might also try the following:

Open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, uncheck Block Pop-Ups.

My block pop-ups in internet options is unchecked. I also have Norton
firewall and
the Ad Blocking is turned off. When I try to click on the icon in this site
to post a new question, I get the message "A pop-up window was blocked" on
the lower left corner of my screen right beside the E symbol. I clicked the
pop-up icon on the right side and it says "Turn on pop-up blocker" so I
assume it is still off.

I badly need to post a new question since I have a problem with my restart
and turn-off buttons also. 1st time I click it, a few icons disappear from
my taskbar but the PC remains active. I have to click it a 2nd time for it
to restart or turn-off. Please help. This is a brand new dell dimension
4700 pc and it's < 1 month old and I have several problems already.

What's the problem doing that?

Hmm... I just tried this. You have to singleclick on that New button.
That brings up a popup menu with items Question and General
Comment in it. Clicking on Question pops up a New Question
window. It is an IE window but there is no Address bar or Toolbar
on it.

Were you logged in to Passport before trying to do this?
It is definitely messier trying to get to that New Question window
with a Passport login prompt being injected in between.

Even if you have the popup blocker in effect you could force it
to allow these ones by putting microsoft.com in your Trusted sites
list. Here's an extract from the Popup Blocker FAQ which elaborates
on that idea:
<quote>
Internet Explorer will not block pop-ups from Web sites that are in
two Web content zones: Local intranet or Trusted sites.
</quote>
