Emoticons On MSN

I have msn messenger 6.1. Why can't other people that I
chat to see my custom emoticons or any that I download
but they can see the default ones that come with
messenger itself.

The only thing they see are the keyboard short cuts.

Either they don't have version 6 or better, or they have custom emoticons
disabled.
