View Full Version : AdobeReader6 and WindowsMessenger5

My problem is, every time before AdobeReader6 started to
load, 'Windows Installer' will pop up saying 'Preparing
to install' (WindowsMessenger5), I have to stop it by
clicking on 'Cancel'. It took about some twenty seconds
in cancelling. Right after that it repeatedly started
preparing to install again, even though I kept cancelling
it.

I have to open 'Windows Task Manager' and have to end it
several times until it finally stopped.

My computer is running on XP Pro. I already have
WindowsMessenger5 and MSN Messenger6 installed some time
ago. I also have disabled the 'Instant Messaging
Scanning' in NAV 2003.

How can I solve this problem. Please help.

Greetings DeeDee,

You can use the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility to fix this.

First, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000pro/util20/1/NT4/EN-US/msicuu.exe

Run and install the program after you've downloaded it. After the setup is complete, click
Start, then Programs (All Programs if you're using XP), then Windows Install Clean Up.

Click Windows Messenger 5.0 or MSN Messenger 6.0 (not sure which version you're referring to)
and then click 'Remove'. Click 'OK' to the warning message that comes up. Also, you may
need to recreate some Messenger shortcuts (you'll find Windows Messenger in \Program
Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe and MSN Messenger in \Program Files in \Program Files\MSN
Messenger\msnmsgr.exe).

Thanks Jonathan. AdobeReader6 starts without problem now.

However, I can create shortcut of WindowsMessenger5 on
Desktop, but when I go to Start>Programs and doubleclick
on WindowsMessenger5, it says 'Problem with shortcut -
the parameter is incorrect'. How can I create a correct
shortcut there?

Hi,

Just drag the icon from the Desktop to the Start button (just hold it there for a second),
then Start menu will popup and you can then put it where you'd like.

Alternatively, you can right-click the Start button, choose Open, then choose the Programs
folder, and move/make the shortcut there.

Hi,
Yes I did tests on a XP SP1 workstation
There was an error message like "you need administrator rights" ; I have
full and admin rights on this workstation

So when I read this article
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5fed58f0-8b41-4928-8939-328452843bce&DisplayLang=en

I saw this important information at the bottom of this article :
" Important: The Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe utilities are not supported on
systems where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed,
including Microsoft Windows XP. "

So I could NOT follow your tip to fix windows messenger 5.0 wich launch
Windows Installer each time Acrobat Reader 6.0 has opened...

So what is the next try ?

Thank you for your help,

----------
Philippe
