I cannot get win xp to install this printer. it seems that it is a driver
problem even though i have used the cd and also a downloaded driver from
epson. tech support has not solved the problem even after 2 hours on the
phone they seem to think it is a ms usb driver problem. any help would be
appreciated

Are the USB ports known to be working correctly with other USB devices?

What exactly happens when you try to install the software (without the
printer being attached)?

thank you! yes the usb ports are all working with another printer and also a
flash memory card.the software installs ok up to the point when they tell you
to plug in the cable and then I get a message that there was a problem
installing the hardware and it starts looking for for a driver for (usb 2.0
mfp hi speed). all of my usb ports are 2.0

Is the other printer a non Epson Multifunction printer?
I'm asking this because I have a reverse problem in that a Brother mfp will
not install correctly on one XP system that has an R300M previously
installed, along with a Canon S750. Printer functions are OK for all three,
but the FAX software for the MFP will not function properly, nor will a
configuration utility. The MFP Mfr has acknowledged that at least part of
the problem is known to exist, but has not provided a solution.
The MFP installs properly (all functions) as a LAN TCP/IP device on all
systems.

the other is a single use canon s330 a very basic text printer that works
fine. The epson R320 is also a single use photo printer.nether one is a
multifunction printer, perhaps that may be the problem, because the wizard is
looking for a MFP I know it makes sense now that I see it but I did not know
that MFP meant multifunction printer. Also the spooler was on when I used the
command prompt.I have deleted and reinstalled the software 3 times both with
and without anti-virus turned off
