Does error code -1073740972 mean anything to anyone? I can’t find
hardly a whisper about it thru Google (aside from an article from 2
years ago about patches that I’ve long since installed). I installed
SP2 a week or so ago, which I’m still kicking myself for, and my pc
has been squirrelly ever since (a few weeks now). SP2 apparently
strongly disapproves of Trend Micro products, and, more importantly,
seems to have screwed up the OS it was supposed to improve. I
constantly, but intermittently, get a sudden "services.exe has
encountered an unexpected error and must shutdown ..." error, at
which point I’m allowed (oh joy) to send an error report to Microsoft,
and then the system shuts itself down and restarts. I can’t even use
Microsoft Update because even THAT causes services.exe to fail!!
Security scans show no curently known vulnerabilities on my pc, so if
this is a virus, it’s a brand new one. Any ideas about what the heck
is going on with this silly thing?

You may have been running your anti-virus while you updated, and it had some error. I would remove the update, and try it without
antivirus.
