How do you remove items from the quick launch icon bar
and not have them star up up at start up.

Drag them from the Bar to the Recycle Bin.

Check your startup settings to find out what is causing this.
Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP

Hi, Aquil.
You don't mean the Quick Launch bar (at the left of the Taskbar, near the
Start button). You mean the Notification Area, often still called the
System Tray or SysTray, at the right end, near the clock, don't you?
Look in Start | All Programs | Startup. Delete any programs here that you
don't want to start on every boot. Or drag their icons out of Startup to
some other folder, or to your Desktop.
Or type at the Run prompt: msconfig.exe This will run the System
Configuration Utility so that you can choose which programs you want to
start automatically.
There are basically 3 ways to keep icons out of the SysTray:
1. Don't run the program that puts the icon there - as above.
2. Tell the program to not put the icon in the SysTray - if the program
offers that option.
3. Right-click on the clock, choose Customize Notifications... from the
context menu, click Taskbar | Customize. Here you can set each icon
individually to Always Show, Always Hide or Hide when inactive.
