Add/Remove Windows Components Fax Services

I hope this is a known issue that I am not aware of -
I have not used XP Fax in a while but need to now -
I am running XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2
(All XP updates installed)
Also running:
ZoneAlarm Security Suite 5.5.062.004
Ad-Aware SE 1.05
SpyBot Search and Destroy 1.3
SpywareBlaster 3.2
Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta1)

I previously connected to the Internet through Earthlink
Dial-Up with US Robotics V.92 Fax PCI modem

No longer have the Earthlink account -
Now connect to Internet through Cox Cable
with Linksys WCG200 (Ethernet)

The US Robotics V.92 Fax PCI modem is still installed

Today when I would try to open Configure Fax
from the Fax Console, I was getting an error message
about "unable to make connection to Fax Server"

I saw in services.msc that the Fax service was
Automatic and "stopping"

I now have the Fax service set to Manual -

I unchecked Fax service in
Add/Remove Windows Components and
ran the Wizard and then went back and
checked the Fax service and ran the Wizard
again - it shows that it is installing the Fax service
but the Fax service remains unchecked -

I have tried adding it again about 4 times
and it always remains unchecked -

What do I need to do to get the Fax service
installed again?

Not a known issue.
Is your modem on the Windows XP HCL list?
What does your faxsetup.log tell you?
Have you tried turning off Zone Alarm? It seems to be pretty effective at
disabling Fax.

Thank you for replying -

1.The US Robotics V.92 Fax PCI modem
always worked when connecting to Earthlink
and worked for sending faxes previously

2. I shut down ZoneAlarm and it makes
no difference, and I tried looking throughout ZA
and did not find anything that I thought
might be causing the issue. And the faxing worked
previously with ZA running. But maybe it is ZA
anyway...

3. The faxsetup.log was a bit on the cryptic side
if you ask me. I could not make head nor tails
out of it. May as well have been in Egyptian
hieroglyphs...

I guess I could try uninstalling ZA and if that
does not work, well, I have my important data
backed up and perhaps it's time to run
Ye Olde Format / Clean Install and start over
with a clean slate...

The fact that it worked before is not relevant. If your modem is on the
Windows XP HCL list, then list the precise steps by which you are
installing, what happens and send the faxsetup.log to me.

I don't understand why this isn't a known issue. Not to rant, but I've seen
at least a dozen different messages about MS Fas Services and SP2 ever since
SP2 came out. The symptoms vary a bit, but one thing remains consistent:
Fax services BEFORE SP2 behaved as expected. POST SP2, Fax services behave
unusually.

In my case, I have to uninstall and re-install Fax Services EVERY TIME I do
an auto-upgrade/MS Patch.

It stinks and I wish SOMEONE out there (read: someone from MS) would own up
to this and try to research a fix for it.

Why are you so sure they aren't?
I would imagine they are doing everything they can to reproduce this problem
in house. There are no simple solutions for problems like these.

Listen, I develop software for a living, so I know how it goes. But from a
customer service standpoint, it's really frustrating.

Windows is suck spaghetti code that Microsoft doesn't keep adequate track of
what component is using what library. So, when a security hole is
discovered, WHAM a whole wave of regression bugs that aren't adequately
being tested in house.

For a long time, the running joke is that one of the reason that Microsoft
is so profitable is that it's QA staff is half the size of what it should be
and it doesn't employ beta-testers. Microsoft foists partially tested code
on the rest of us, knowing that they've gotten most of the known universe
hooked on their software.

The end result? There's always SOMETHING about Microsoft's software that I
need that either I can't use or I can only use with a great deal of pain.

So, I go to Microsoft.com looking for some kind of help and SURPRISE, I
can't find any.

If I provided that level of customer service, I'd lose my job.

I take no issue with any of your points. They may well be true. They may be
unfair accusations. Few of us really have the wherewithal to know. What I do
know is that the fax developers take these problems seriously and are very
likely working feverishly to reproduce and rectify them.
