where can i get more detailed information about this error?

nothing shows up in event viewer and the message is so vague that i can't
troubleshoot it.

With your 98 boot disk, use Fdisk first to remove the non dos partition.
Then make a new dos partition and make it active, exit and format. (fat32
only).

my o/s is xp home. what has partitions got to do with it??? :)
