512 mbytes, and an amd athlon 1900 - plenty of cpu and memory.
This just started a week ago and my usage pattern hasn't changed.
I'm guessing my son downloaded something with some game - probably a
shockwave game, but virus scans come up empty. A system reload helped
to the point where the startup of the problem is now about an hour or
more, but let my machine sit idle and it goes to 100% CPU eventually!

Try a little cooling if possible by opening a window or using a fan to
eliminate a possible heat problem.

Interesting idea, but I doubt it - a reboot starts the cycle with no
powerdown or waiting, so no cooling. As it happens, it's cool tonight,
and I've still go the problem, despite an open window in the next room.

I read it. As I read it, it doesne't apply - I've not added a new app,
and unless the memory mgmt changed post sp1, I don't have that problem
-everything was fine up until about April 5, and I've been running sp1
since January or so.
Besides, the system gets full just sitting idle.

We had similar problems with 2 systems, XP and 98. It turned out
to be spyware. There is a very good, stable, spyware remove available free
from
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ click the Download link.
It installs in minutes. After install, launch Ad-aware 6.0, click the Status
button
and click the "Check for updates now" button and follow though with that.
Then click the Scan button and do a default scan with default settings. I'll
bet that you will see an performance improvement after removing spyware.
We certinally did. Ad-aware does not by default remain running; by default
you have to run it manually. It has caused no system problems on any of our
systems (from Windows 9x to Windows XP Pro). At this point, part
of my weekly maintenance involves running Ad-aware.
Good luck with it.

I am having the exact same problem. The only thing that
has changes was installing an MS update that went out last
week.
