How to restore to a new hard disk?

I make a weekly full backup to a second hard disk. It's a
scheduled job, runs at night, so it's created
automatically. How can I use this backup for a full
restore on a new hard disk (in case the old one would
crash)?

I know about an ASR backup, but then I need to create a
ASR diskette as well. Is this ASR diskette specific to one
particular backup file, or can I use it for any backup
file created on my PC with the XP backup tool?
