InstallShield failings

When I try to install one of many different programs (this all started
with installing Sun Java SE 1.4.1_02) InstallShield hangs at a certain
point. If I terminate it using Task Manager then I get an error
message saying:

"The remote procedure call failed."

Can anyone help - I've tried using the Event Viewer but with no
success. I am currentlt unable to install pretty much anything that
uses InstallShield
