View Full Version : Explorer.exe crash in user32.dll after installing sp2

Hi after installing XP sp2 on a dell PC when logging into any profile a
explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close message is
displayed. Looking at the error details app name is explorer.exe App ver
0.0.0.0 mod name user32.dll
modver is 5.1.2600.2180 offset 00009be9

any ideas on what to try next the pc is unusable. ? safe mode and
uninstall SP2 ?

Have you updated all your dell drivers ?

hi steve

because explorer.exe is not runingthe desktop is completely blank ie no
icons. there is no start bar so how am i going to be alble to insrall the
drivers ?
Tried going in in safe mode and last known good config and thre same error
happens there.

Since you can get into safe mode, try removing SP2. If that works, you
can update the necessary drivers. Video, audio, and motherboard (bios)
drivers are suspect. If you have a wireless card, especially USB, this
can cause a problem. If your system was infected by certain spyware
programs or viruses, you will also get this problem. Check the drivers
and make sure the system is CLEAN, then re-install SP2. It is best to
have any external devices detached during the upgrade.

i was hopegully going to go into safe mode and uninstall sp2 but
the same error happens there as well i cant see any of the icons as
explorer.exe crashes.

the only option i can see is to do am XP repair
whats ur opinion

Have you tried to 'enabIe VGA mode' in safe mode? If the video card is
at fault, this may get you into windows.

If you need to retain the data, try going into the setup mode and
reinstall on top of the old system. No guarantees!
