Patty, I hope you see this. Thanks!!!
regedit.com worked! Now: (1) what .exe file is called by
ctl-alt-delete? (2) How do I proceed to find & purge the
virus?

renaming regedit.exe to regedit.com and see if it will
open.

taskmgr.exe
You have either the Klez or Yaha viruses (most likely).

Leonard, David is correct on the .exe file and also the viruses. I'm =
very surprised an up-to-date virus program hasn't caught them however. =
Perhaps there is a new strain? I'm curious as to what is in your =
msconfig startup list. Could you post it here? Anything that begins =
with win??? (? being a variable)?

screen shots of my msconfig startup list are at
http://home.earthlink.net/~lcs510/msconfig1.gif
and
http://home.earthlink.net/~lcs510/msconfig2.gif
The only suspicious item I see is "BETA.EXE" and I will
try a boot without it.
BTW, I had to change msconfig to .com to open it.
also, I am new to XP but not to MS and prior OS;
(25+ yrs)
Questions:
(1) Why doesn't MS make the msconfig window sizable and
printable???
(2) What executable opens from ctl-alt-dele
Thanks for your interest

1. The info is printable and savable and resizable if you use msinfo32 =
to view the info.
2. As I said before taskmgr.exe.

Do a search for beta.exe. Right-click the file and choose properties. =
Go through the various items on the version tab. Who makes it? Any =
clue as to the program?
And yes, as David said, the executable for ctl-alt-del is taskmgr.exe.
