View Full Version : XP SP2 triggering Autorun on network shares

Has anyone else see this scenario?
When building my images I am logged on to the XP Sp2 machine as local
administrator. If I map to the network share to install Office from the
administrative sharepoint, SP2 does not let me see the folder contents and
chooses the Office version I want, but rather, immediately runs the
Autorun.INF and executes whatever exe is named in the INF file. Renaming the
INF in the share circumvents the problem, but since the administrative
install puts the Autorun.INF in the sharepoint in the first place, and the
mere mapping to the share never caused the Autorun.INF to be run before, it
would appear that we have another undocumented feature in SP2.

You could download TweakUI for XP (part of the PowerToys for XP). With
this, you can tell XP which drive to allow "Autorun" on.

since this is to go into an image for duplication throughout our company,
TweakUI is not an option. Since the machines are setup to use the
Office install Sharepoint when necessary for updates automatically, the
fact of having an Autorun being triggered by a network drive mapping is
a problem brought on by SP2. My only option at this point is to go through
all my sharepoint installs and strip out any Auntorun.INF files that I find,
else all the existing machines that get remotely upgraded to SP2 will no
longer be able to get to the proper sharepoint when required.
