Losing mapped drives in Windows XP SP2

Hi group,
I have a perculiar problem with a Win XPPro machine. It has just been
installed at the client (not by me) and it is connecting to a Redhat Linux
server (not my choice, the clients). In order to map drives, I have to use a
user profile on the Linux box which differs from that of the Win XP Pro
workstation. When I map the drives, I "Connect using a different user name"
and supply the necessary UserID and password. I also chekc the reconnect at
logon checkbox. The resource is then available for use.
If the user shuts down the PC and restarts, the drive letters still appear
to be mapped in My Computer, but if the user attempts to brwose either of the
drives an error message displays to the effect that the userid and/or
password are invalid.
If I dosconnect the drives in My computer using the Dsconnect Network Drives
dialog, the drives do not dissappear from My Computer, nor do they show as
disconnected.
Anybody have any ideas?

Something is set up incorrectly. You should have:

1. The same user account and password created on the Linux box to match
the one on the XP box.
2. Presumably the Linux box is running Samba. The same user name and
password needs to be added to Samba with either smbpasswd -a or Webmin
if that is how the RH box is being administered.
3. Make sure you set appropriate permissions on both boxen.

At that point, the XP box will have no problem accessing the Samba (RH)
server and will not be asked for credentials. You can then either map a
drive or make a shortcut to the RH share. The share will persist
through XP reboots.
