Karen,
Get a good virus scanner, like Norton AV or AVG, update the definitions, and
do a full system scan. Make sure it is truly a virus before you go to the
pain of reformatting.
To reformat and reinstall XP:
Set your computer's bios to boot from CD-Rom
Reboot and when prompted to press a key to boot from cd, do so
XP cd will boot, choose install rather than repair
XP will find your current installation, choose new install, then choose
format. You can format from here, then continue to install XP clean once
formatting is done.
Be sure and back up any important data files you want to keep, however make
sure they are clean from an virus before restoring them back.
