XP home addition upgrade SP2 problem

Having upgraded the SP2 and rebooted, the system restarts and the user logon
screen appears and on selection enters into the user area ok. But! nothing
works.
Selecting programs or double clicking icons does nothing apart from showing
the "egg timer" for a few seconds.
