How can you make sure that you have no programs running
in your coputer, befor you install new software?

With Windows XP, you do not need to be concerned with
programs running in the background while installing new
software programs, although you should disable your antivirus
program before commencing.

No need to. I just finished a test on my computer. While downloading a 16
Mbyte file, I sent myself a 2 Meg e-mail and played a game while sending and
receiving and installing the downloaded file. I do NOT however use or have a
virus detect program on my system which is where almost all problems
originate.
