View Full Version : Printer won't install

When my PC detects my printer (DeskJet340), it starts the installation, but
aborts the wizard stating "There was a problem installing this hardware. An
error occurred during the installation of this device. The data is invalid".
Can anyone help me how to resolve this? I have tried to install it manually
using the wizard, as well, but it won't install.
Any help is appreciated.

There is no Windows XP or 2000 driver for this printer. How are you
installing it? If you're using the CD it will not work (you cannot use 9x
drivers under XP). The only driver is the native one - is that what you're
using?

Suggest you uninstall and reinstall the unit properly
http://www.coribright.com/Windows/Article%20One.htm

If that doesn't work, then you might consider purchasing an XP-compatible
printer.

Open your Control Panel and click on the "Add Hardware" iconÂ*.
The "Add Hardware Wizard" will appear.

1. Click on Next and place a dot next to "Yes, I have alreaÂ*dy connected the hardware".
2. Click Next and scroll all the way down to "Add a new harÂ*dware device".
3. Click once to highlight it and click Next.
4. Place a dot next to "Install the hardware that I manuallÂ*y select from a list (Advanced)".
5. Click Next and scroll down to "Printers", click once to Â*highlight and click Next.
6. Place a dot next to "Use the following port" and click NÂ*ext.
7. In the "Install Printer Software Screen", on the left siÂ*de scroll down to "HP"

Thank you for the post. I have used the wizard in the XP in 2 different ways:
- 1 - to let the system detect "New Hardware" and attempt to install it
automatically; and
- 2 - to use the "Add New Printer" wizard from the Printers and Faxes
section in the Control Panel.
Both ways have resulted in the installation aborting, and telling me that
they cannot finish. I have tried both the 340 standard and the 340
(Monochrome) version, but they both end up with the same result.
I'm stumped.

Thank you for the reply.
I have tried this way of installing. After it begins installing the driver,
the system tells me "Printer Driver was not installed. Operation could not be
completed". I have a feeling that there's something wrong with the drivers in
the XP, but I'm unable to verify this. Thank you, againa.

You can get this message during installation if the account you are
using does not have the permissions needed to install the device.

Remove any and all drivers for the device in the usual way using
Start Printers and faxes Highlight the printer in the list. Select
Delete printer from the list in the left window.

Shut down the computer. Restart Windows under the administrator
account. Install the driver. Make sure it is an XP driver. The Windows
9x drivers will _not_ install. Use the drivers on the Windows XP
distribution CD. There are no drivers available directly from HP that
work with any Windows NT system, including XP.

Now, can someone help me? My hp deskjet 340 used to run well with xp. I had
to reformat the drive and reload xp. No unsolvable problems resulted, execpt
the hp
340 overprints gibberish on whatever it prints.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times: both the xp monochrome and
color drivers.

I've changed cables.

I've tried installing the windows 98 drivers from HP: they offer no xp
driver for this printer.

Somewhere along the line someone--hp, i think--warns about installing 2
printer drivers in the same file. Couldl that be the problem? The only ones I
ever installed were the 340 monochrome and color that xp offers.

Thanks for any help.

Disconnect the printer from the PC. Follow the instructions at Bruce
Sanderson's website to clean up all remnants of the previously installed
printer drivers.

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

After the cleanup, reboot. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the
printer and only connect it when the Wizard tells you to do so.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Tried running cleanspl.exe, following
instructions, many times. I also uninstalled a spyware program and disabled
internet security and anti-virus.

You wrote "and only connect it when the Wizard tells you to do so. " If it
makes any difference, the wizard never tells me to do so.

I tried having windows recognize the printer as plug and play. It appears
to do so, but the printer gives the signal that the cartridge needs to be
replaced. It won't print anything. If I recall correctly, this is why XP
used to (when times were good for me) want to install 2 drivers for this
printer: one for monochrome and another for color.

And to think that it worked OK a few days ago. Am I still missing something?
Does manually modifying the registry accomplish more than just running
cleanspl (along with the other instructions)?

Thanks,

dq

Enable Legacy was not checked. With it now checked, I've tried 2 procedures
with the install printer wizard (after deleting the drivers and cleaning the
spool): recognizing the printer as plug and play, and installing the driver
(color) from the list. No luck either way.

When the problem with the hp340 started, I wanted to use an hp1120c over my
home network. This installed drivers. I had also tried to load the 1120c
support files from a cd .. without success. This printer , built in 1998, I
think, works fine over the network

Now I tried to install it as a local printer. My laptop--the machine giving
me this trouble--recognized it as plug and play, but it does not print
correctly.

So, my machine is very confused. I notice a dozen files named "hp...." in
the Windows directory. What if i deleted these? ... I suppose I'd have to
follow the instructions that you referred to me about modifying the
registry, too.

As you may have gathered, I know only enough to be be considered armed and
extremely dangerous. Thank you once again for your help.

Solved, at last. I uninstalled an external cd-rom device which used the
parallel port. That's why the printer acted strange as soon as it was
connected to the laptop.

Thanks again for your help.

You can't 'piggy back' LPT devices in XP as you could in earlier O/Ses.

Has anyone helped you with this? I have the exact same frustrating problem.
It seems as though there are no drivers available via the add printer wizard.
Downloading the drivers results in the very generic error "Printer driver
was not installed. Operation could not be completed."

They are definitely included
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293378

Try the drivers for the DeskJet 500 if everything else has failed. They are
about the most generic driver that is possible to get.

My problem is that the drivers don't appear in the wizard. I know they're
supposed to be there, but the only one that appears in the list is "Dell
Photo Printer 720".
I have downloaded the appropriate drivers from the manufacturer and can
follow the "Have Disk" link in the wizard to get the driver to appear. But
when I finish the driver I get the message "Printer driver was not installed.
Operation could not be completed."

Run a System File Check.....

From the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow

(note the space between the c and the /)

Tried it, and nothing was found to have errors.
I did uninstall SP2 and re-install. That brought the list of printers into
the wizard, but I still get the error "Printer driver was not installed.
Operation could not be completed."

Has anyone found a solution to the problem below that doesn't involve
re-loading XP?
Thanks,
Dave

Tried it, and nothing was found to have errors.
I did uninstall SP2 and re-install. That brought the list of printers into
the wizard, but I still get the error "Printer driver was not installed.
Operation could not be completed."
