I had a similar problem. I had installed a sound card on
and my motherboard had a built in sound card. I could
not disable the onboard sound. Once I removed the sound
card that I bought the problems were resolved. Perhaps
it is something like that?

Better do some basic maintenance :

open the case and LOOK clean the dust out with a soft brush
pull the memory and reseat also all the others [vid/sound/lan etc]
check ALL the cooling fans for proper operation

you can do a restore from the XP cd [don't use console]use the install
restore , it'll keep your programs intact [doesn't save SP1 tho]

lemme know what you find
