View Full Version : WinXP disk defragmenter

I have a 3 month old computer that the defragmenter
display shows about large amount of fragmented files even
after the defragmenter is done. I've never seen this
before in Win2K or XP. Here's the details:

Drive: 30GB
Windows sees: 27.8GB
Windows shows available: 24.3GB

When viewing the C-drive, there's about 2.5GB on it.
The defragmenter is showing about half the drive full.
Over 50% of it is fragmented (red).
When defragmenting is complete, still over 50% is showing
fragmented.
The report only says two files are fragmented and 1
folder.

To me, none of this makes sense.
Why does the defragmenter show over 50% of the drive
full, but indicate 82% free on the top of the program?
Why is there about 4.5GB of used space indicated in the
defragmenter, but only 2.5GB when viewing the drive?
Why does the defragmenter show so many fragmented files
even after defragmentation?
Why does defragmentation report show only 2 fragmented
files, but he display shows half the drive is fragmented?

One other thing. This computer is on a network and all
program files are saved to a server. None are
automatically saved to the local computer. Also, the
computer started acting sluggish recently - taking a long
time to shut down or reboot. This is what prompted me to
clean and defragment.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

Hi -

Diskeeper Lite doesn't require that your current defrag be installed.
Did you see any error message when trying to install Diskeeper Lite?
Anything else saying why it wouldn't run? If you let the Executive
Software Tech Support folks ) know what
error message you saw (if any), they should be able to help you get
Diskeeper Lite running on your system. I think you'll find it's much
better than the built-in defragger, although it still doesn't compare
to the full-fledged Diskeeper product.

I hope this helps -
