If you had Windows 98, your computer is probably 3-4
years old. Therefore, the BIOS is probably too. You can
try upgrading to the newest BIOS from the manufacturer's
website, but sometimes this doesn't work either.
Basically, the problem is because your motherboard is old
and WinXP is new. You'll probably have to live with it.
It's not a shutdown "problem" as someone else posted.
You're using new software on an old machine.
I have an old Pentium II computer I gave to my son. When
I put Win2K in it, it wouldn't shut down by itself
either. A BIOS upgrade didn't help. Being an older slow
400Mhz computer, I decided to go to a computer show and
picked up a Gigabyte motherboard for $59 and a AMD Duron
1.3Ghz processor for $38. Fan was $8. The board will run
with 100Mhz or 133Mhz RAM in it. I used all 384Mb of
PC100 RAM I had in the old motherboard. Now, even though
the processor has a 200Mhz front side bus with 100Mhz
RAM, the computer boots quickly, runs great, and shuts
down by itself. All for around $100! Something to think
about.
