I know this isn't going to help you. But I never do
updates to Windows or software unless it is done when
Windows and the software are first installed. If you look
down through this column of problems, you'll see several
people with Windows software problems after installing
upgrades.
If your computer is working fine, don't change anything.
This is what happens. Every hear the saying "Don't fix if
it ain't broke." Same goes for Windows.
You can try installing your XP disc and re-installing
Windows without formatting the drive an wiping everything
out. If this doesn't work, I suggest you take the
computer to a qualified technician for a format and
reload of Windows.

Hi, does that includes security patches, virus updates etc. Fairly
irresponsible advice in my opinion to say never update....

Sheer nonsense. By updating you are potentially preventing future problems.
If it ain't broke don't fix it is ridiculous. Why not make it better?

Hi,
Try boot from your XP CD to perform a repair install of
XP. After you have rebuild the OS, disable auto update
and monitor the windows update by yourself.
Be careful, make sure you select repair install otherwise
you may lose all the data files and applications.
