I have a folder on my desktop that is empty with no name. I can't rename it
or delete it. ti says cannot read from disk or source. Any suggestions? I

Go into safe mode and delete it. Or get a file deleter like Delete Doctor.
Sometimes a process may lock a file so you can't delete it. In that case you
get a file in use warning. For those cases get WhoLockMe. It will tell you
the process that has locked the file and you can then close that process and
delete the file. Post back if you need more. TTFN.

There was a related Question about access-denied to folder at
Subject: Administrator Documents and Settings File Access Denied. Since the
folder is empty what process would be locking it? Another good
process-viewer/killer ultilty is Sysinternals Process Explorer. It's free and
gives a lot of information about process threads and file handles.

Nope, it didn't even show up in safe mode on the desktop. Delete Doctor needs
a name to delete the folder.

Hi. I have the same problem, a hidden file with unknown extension on my =
desktop. Can't change the name or delete file. Tried safe mode and ran =
all updated anti-virus, spybot, spyware blaster, HiJack This, etc. =
Nothing. Please post if you find an answer. Thanks. deango.Rich wrote:

There was one time when I had a ghost image file on a separate logical NTFS
partition and it acted the same way. I even installed WinXP again on another
partition and it still wouldn't let me delete it. Finally I installed WinME
with a copy of Winternals NTFS for Win98 and deleted it that way.

Just thought of another thing Rich. Does this folder show up in the desktop
folder for the current user? Maybe you can manipulate it from there.

Mine does show up in the desktop folder. C:/Documents and Settings/My =
Name/Desktop. Have tried the recommend 'Delete Doctor' with System =
Restore 'delete on reboot' with System Restore turned off. Nothing. =
Still in the folder and still a shortcut on my desktop...........You'd =
think you could go into the registry and get rid of it, but I wouldn't =
know where to start............Regards, deango Rich wrote:

Well I was able to find where it came from & where it is, but I still can't
delete it. It came from AIM & sits in the AIM95 folder, empty! I should have
known that AOHell had something to do with it! Now I just have to figure out
how to get rid of it.

deango, is the file in use? If it is then kill the process using it. If you
select properites for the file, do you get a security tab? If you don't go up
to folder options and uncheck simple file-sharing. You should be able to
manipulate it now.

Where's simple file-sharing? It wasn't in folder options. My folder does not
show a security tab.

Same here. No 'simple file sharing' in Folder Options and no Security =
Tab. The file doesn't seem to be in use (I don't think). It has 0 =
bytes and only showed up when I unchecked 'Hide protected operating =
system files'............deango

Its under Tools>Folder Options>View Tab>right at the bottom. If you uncheck
that you should get the security property sheet.

Using XP home
I have folders in a number of locations that I need to keep. trying to
rename them by right click, or in winsows explorer and safe mode just soes
not work. I have tried the solutions sugested by a few people through several
news groups but none are working.
When a folder is renamed or deleted, the option comes up to bebug or to
cancel, chose cancel and the program, be it explorer or the right just shuts
down, If debug is selected the debugger tries to work, but fails, and offers
a problem report to MS.
I have sent these in so many times but with no response.
Sometimes I wish I had stuck with windows 98
If someone, maybe even MS can give a solution, it would mean that I can lose
the many new folder titles the drive me crazy in nearly every folder on my PC.
