I'm now presented with a password dialogue box at start-up, CTRL+ALT+DEL
splashes up a 6 option dialogue box (Lock Computer; Log Off; Shut Down;
Change Password; Task Manager; Cancel) instead of taking me straight to Task
Manager (as before), and when I shut down I get a dialogue box with a drop
down menu rather than the Log Off/Shut Down/Restart 'three-button' box. In
short, things are clunky whereas before they were somewhat smooth. Rather
than an 'unattended' start up I now have to hit the enter button; rather than
going directly to Task Manager I now have to select it from six options; and
rather than just shutting down I now have to select and option and hit enter
again. Has this happened to anyone else? Can I get back my 'old' Windows? Or
do I have to roll back to SP1? Any help would be wonderful!

I believe that happens when an XP machine is connected to a network domain.
If this is a work computer and you do not need to be attached to the domain
to access network resources, you can disjoin from the domain and join a
workgroup. That should put it back to the way it was before. To get rid of
having to press control alt del at startup, follow these directions:

You can use the following steps to enable automatic logon:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type: control userpasswords2 , and then click OK.
3. In the dialog box that appears, clear the "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer" check box, and then click OK.

But if you are in a domain, I think youhave to log in.
