View Full Version : XP Pro SP2 Limited or no Connectivity

Hi all,

I've been asked to look at a broadband internet problem on a PC running XP
Pro with SP2. The machine normally connects to NTL's cable broadband via a
set top box, rather than a cable modem, and uses the mobo's onboard LAN
(SiS900 on a PC Chips 810LMR board) rather than the USB to Ethernet adapter
that NTL supply.

I'm told that the machine has been behaving normally for some time, and is
kept clean(ish) with various anti virus / anti malware utils, firewall, etc.
Several days ago, Ad-Aware apparently found and removed "something" - the
machine's owner can't recall what but, according to Ad-Aware's quarantine
list, the last thing it dealt with was TopMoxie. I'm told that the owner
left Ad-Aware to deal with whatever it found, and when he returned, the
network connection icon in the tray was reporting "Limited or no
connectivity".

After trying to roll the machine back a couple of days via system restore,
he asked me to look at it. Thinking that the problem might stem from a
faulty cable or set top box I've attached the machine to my network, but the
problem persistes. Having done a little googling, I tried adding a second
NIC and using that to connect, but it made no difference.

I've tried netsh int ip reset, and attempted to install the patch documented
here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884020

Unfortunately, the patch setup seems to hang about 2/3 way through the
install.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA,

Rob Ashburn.

Try this command: netsh winsock reset catalog

Try un-installing and re-installing the NIC.

You're welcome, Rob. That's a new command in XP Service Pack 2 that
can fix corrupted network connections and TCP/IP stacks. I'm glad
that it worked for you.

For pre-SP2 XP systems, you can use this program:
