Vibrating Mouse Cursor

Running Win XP SP2 with NIS 2005 on a Dell Inspiron 4190, with an external
keyboard and mouse sharing a PS2 port, I noticed my mouse cursor vibrating
and wandering across the screen, especially when the HD was busy (such as at
start up). Then I lost the left click on both external mouse and the touch
pad and joystick.

A full system scan with NAV’s latest virus definitions revealed no infection
and no spyware. Disconnecting the external mouse and keyboard and rebooting
did not help.

However, removing the mouse from Device Manager, and rebooting, seems to
have fixed the problem for now.

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who can shed light on what gave rise
to the vibrating mouse in the first place.

Drift can be caused by many things..
If it is an optical mouse, might I suggest cleaning whatever it is sitting
on?

I would bet it's an optical mouse.

Yes the external mouse is optical, but the drift continued after I unplugged
it.
And the left mouseclick became disabled not only on the external mouse
(before I unplugged it) but also on two left mouse buttons built into the
keyboard.

In Mouse Properties, Pointer Options try turning off "Enhanced precision"
