View Full Version : Registry - multiple entries for the USB devices after moving them to another port

I've moved a number of devices from one USB port to another. I now see in My
COmputer that these devices have a suffix (2), (3) etc after them.
In the registry, the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/...
/Enum/USB/Vidxxxxxxxx now has multiple subkeys containing the "devicename
#2"
"...#3" names etc., as well as the original un-numbered subkey. I also see
two ControlSet keys under .../SYSTEM labelled
ControlSet001 and ...002 each containing these multiple keys as well as the
Current
Control Set key which has the same (or very similar) entries.
There seems to
be a lot of orphaned chaff.
I don't want this chaff in the registry!
Questions :
1. Why two ControlSet0001, 0002 keys, apparently duplicates of each other?
2. Can I simply delete the "orphan" Vidxxxxxx keys and rename the string in
the "good" one to remove the number?
Removing the hardware & allowing a reinstall doesn't clean things up, just
adds one more entry!. Norton SystemWorks tool
doesn't detect the orphaned keys.
TIA James :-)

Hi James,
Neither Norton System Works nor System Mechanic wouldn't help. I had the
same problem with my scanner. See below the method to resolve the problem:
Hi,
I used to have similar issue on my own computer. It happens to my NIC. I
understand it is really annoy to see the #2, #3. It is the new instance
created by the system for the same class of the device. We may modify it
via Registry.
To gain the permission to modify the special node, follow the steps below:
1. Log on as an administrator right user.
2. Open Registry Editor.
3. Select the node you want to modify and right click to choose
Permissions...
4. On the Security tab, set the Everyone to get Full Control.
5. Press OK.
6. Modify it.
7. Set the Permissions back.
8. Done.

Hi, guys
My problem is with Epson scanner connected to my laptop via USB hub. Each
time I re-install the hub or unplug/re-plug the scanner into another port on
the hub it goes through new enumeration process and records into
HKLM/SYSTEM/CONTROL SET 001/CONTROL/CLASS and into HKLM/SYSTEM/CONTROL SET
001/ENUM/USB new keys which have the value "Friendly/Name Epson Perfection
1240 #*" (where * is the consecutive number of the enumeration process). I
have about 8 of them now. The thing that bugs me is that it shows scanner
in the Control panel and in the Device Manager with those silly numbers (i.e
Epson Perfection 1240 #3, etc). I tried to modify the value in the registry
to get rid of # and the number. I managed to do it in HKLM/SYSTEM/CONTROL
SET 001/CONTROL/CLASS, which controls the display of the name in the Control
panel, but the system doesn't allow to modify the value in the
HKLM/SYSTEM/CONTROL SET 001/ENUM/USB, which controls the display of the name
in the Device manager.
Epson are obviously useless and haven't got a clue apart from
install/uninstall, but it just adds more numbers rather than resolving the
problem.
Tried registry cleaners with no effect.
Any ideas of how to get rid of this phantom entries? Thanks in advance for
all your input.
