Recently, I encountered a situation with a corrupt installation of IE6 on a
machine with XP SP2.
I have seen many people suggesting to follow
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 which has no information about
fixing a corrupt IE6 installation for SP2.
So, I started to do my own research in this area.
Finally, after numerous hit and trials on my test windows machine, I was
able to find a solution.
Hope it helps all of you struggling with this problem.
Please read the disclaimer information very carefuly.
Have fun

Disclaimer: The steps mentioned in this document are not recommended/
approved/ endorsed by Microsoft Inc. There are chances that after following
these steps the system might not reboot at all (not even in safe mode). It is
strongly suggested to follow this document only as a last alternative before
reinstalling windows. The author assumes no responsibility whatsoever.
Reader discretion is recommended at “ your own Risk”.
This document is an attempt to repair a corrupt installation of Internet
Explorer 6 on Windows XP SP2. At the time of writing this document,
Microsoft has no instructions how to reinstall Internet Explorer for Windows
XP SP2. The first recommended step (as recommended by Microsoft) is to run
the windows file protection command sfc /scannow from the terminal. Reboot
the computer once the file checker completes. The Windows XP installation
slipstream SP2 CD (or the SP2 installation files if it was installed over a
base installation) would be required for the file checker to execute
successfully.
If Internet explorer is still in an “unexecutable state”, search for the
ie.inf file in the windows\inf directory. Right click on the file and click
install. Browse to the IE installation file on the CD when prompted. Reboot
the machine.
If the above solves the problem, do not read further.
Incase the problem still exists, a full IE reinstall is now going to be
attempted. Again, please read the disclaimer above.
Download the IE 6 update for Windows XP SP2. This would be required during
the installation. At the time of writing this document Microsoft has not
released a cumulative update for IE6SP2. This installation was tested with
the setup of IE6SP1 which is the latest downloadable version of IE from
Microsoft’s website.
* The first step is to copy the following lines and create a .reg file
to remove the registry keys of IE which prevent from installing the setup
files.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}]
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This reg file is called “ie_reinstall.reg” in this document.
* Download IE 6 SP1 from Microsoft’s website.
* Run ie_reinstall.reg. Reboot the machine if prompted.
* Execute the IE installer. Once the installation is complete DO NOT
CLICK FINISH. Doing so would lead the system to an irreversible damaged state
which would not reboot in safe mode either -- you would have to reinstall
windows all over again!!!!!
* Install the update for IE6 for Windows XP SP2 without clicking on
finish as mentioned above. Once completed successfully, it is okay to click
finish on the IE6SP1 installation dialog box.
* The machine should reboot. If everything works fine,
congratulations!! You have successfully reinstalled Internet Explorer 6.

Please go to microsoft.com, click on the downloads link, click on the
catagory "Internet".
The SP2 IE update is listed as:
Update for Internet Explorer 6 for XP Service Pack 2 (KB885932)
Link location:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5437f94d-899f-425c-b2a4-893ba3a16d71&displaylang=en
I apologize for considering that obvious.

Correction:
The reg file mentioned above should be read as:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}]
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\]
"Version"=-

Thanks! But, it looks like the hotfix installs the updated version of
Vgx.dll and does not seem to modify any other system file. Moreover, this
Hotfix is created for a specific problem:
<Quote>
This update addresses an issue when you view a Web page that can render
vector graphics on screen in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 running on
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Internet Explorer may stop
responding or crash and you receive an access violation in Vgx.dll.
