I suppose we should be glad if anyone takes the time and patience to look at
our problems and offering a solution is a bonus.I must say that shep and my
friend in texas has sorted me
over the past few weeks and in the case of "shep" for several years.I blew a
gasket to today when someone called Sharon MVP offered a solution to my
Compaq demanding a log on when I had not set one.Her solution was to use
Tweak UI.notwithstanding that the problem was that I couldn't log on.How
does someone become a MVP and what does it mean.
I must admit that the majority of MVP replies I have seen are excellent but
I seem to see more and more MVP's offering
a solution that has nothing to do with the problem.

Then maybe you didn't word your problem coherently!

Sharon is seldom wrong in her answers and I think you owe her an apology!

As I read it now, you don't want to have to "log on" manually when you start
your computer. You "CAN" alter this function by using tweakUI (there are
other ways also)!

Maybe it's time for you to grow up a bit!

If you installed the DotNET framework update, it adds a user account to
the system. Although it doesn't display on the Welcome screen, its
presence will cause a stop there and you are prompted to logon. You can
regain the automatic logon by:

-- Installing TweakUI and setting up your account for autologon
OR
-- Use Start> Run and type in CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 Uncheck the box
next to "all users must enter username and passwords. You will be asked
which user to logon automatically. Answer the prompts to finish up.

Every single thing she said is applicable, and also correct! I have
performed these operations on computers too numerous to count! Any one of
her answers will work just fine, assuming you installed a password
initially.

Now, if you never entered a password during the install process, when the
prompt asked for one.......?

Well said Crusty! Some people appear to be here to whine when their own
inadequacies don't allow them to apply the information given to them. This
wasn't Sharon's error, more a BCAK error on Johnny's part.

Blessed be,

Greetings --

There are a few permutations that mean essential the same thing:

CKI Error = Chair/Keyboard Interface Error
PEBCAK = Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard
TPLBCAK = The Problem Lies Between Chair And Keyboard

My personal favorite is the ID-ten-T error. (Replace "ten" with
the numerical equivalent.)

Hi John,
I didn't see your original post.
Are you using XP home?
If so, try booting to safe mode by pressing F8 at bootup and log in as
Administrator. The password is blank for the admin account on most default
installs.
Once you are into safe mode,go to start/run
type "control userpasswords2"
Click on your username
Click the reset password button.
Type in and confirm a new password
Click OK
Click OK
Reboot to normal mode and log into your account with the new password.

HTH,

Well, to be honest, that statement could be taken two ways

....that you never used a password to log on because you had it set to log on
automatically, and it's not doing that any more...

....or
that you never used a password to log on because you never set one in the
first place.

You meant the second one, someone gave you the answer to the first.

Hi John,

Were you able to get into safe mode and change the password?
Even on XP Pro there is a small chance the Administrator password is
blank(not a good practice--that is why pro prompts you to set up an
administrator password during the installation process).

John,

It's obvious you don't know squat about what you are trying to do. You have
been given the answers but are just too pig headed, or too simple, to follow
directions.

With this, I bow out of this thread as you can't be helped!

John, go back and read your original post. You did not say that you
could not log on at all. You said that XP no longer booted right to the
desktop. Granted, I made the mistake of assuming you were at least
getting the Welcome screen (which was why I suggested setting up an
autologon). But be fair - you forgot to post the full extent of your
problem.

Some newsgroup threads evolve. More information gets posted as the
problem is discussed. The newsgroups worked just as they were designed
to do. Eventually there was enough in the thread that shep stepped up to
bat to give you a hand as well.

I'm glad to see that you've finally got this sorted.

John, if you've never used or assigned a password - the password is
blank. This is also known as a "null password." We see it as nothing. XP
sees it as a special kind of password. Allowed in most situations -
logon as an example (if gpedit.msc is still using default settings). Not
allowed in others such as Task Scheduler.

When there is only one user (the default Administrator account only or
one user account and the default Administrator which becomes hidden in
this scenario), a null password allows XP to skip past the welcome
screen and go directly to the desktop.

The addition of the second net framework account from the Windows update
stops that nice little bonus of not having to deal with the Welcome
screen. You can adjust this behavior. That is "why" I gave you the
adjustments in my first answer. The suggestions will allow you to skip
the welcome screen once again. When you got to the part about entering a
password, you would have left those boxes blank.

Seems we were talking about the same thing after all. :)

Anyhow, you do have this fixed the way you want it now and that's what's
really important. Enjoy your XP and auto logon (because that's what XP
is really doing on its own at this point).

Maybe you shouldn't "take one MPV to task" a they are, after all,
volunteers just like the rest of us. All MPV means is that they have
been recognized by MS ass being helpful and accurate.

Welcome and no need to be forgiven! Frustration understood. Believe me,
you wouldn't want to be in the same room when I'm working through a
stubborn problem. ;)
