Always - but depending on how you answered the Automatic Updates
query at 1st SP2 Boot, it will likely start downloading any updates for
you. Just look for the "Yellow" Security Center shield in the System
Tray.

It is much quicker to do it yourself, than rely on Auto Update. And
with at least 13 updates to XP since SP2, the less time you are without
the updates, the better. The smaller the Window of opportunity for
catching an exploit to a MicroHole, the better.

Great, after the installation, i went for manual/custom updates for
KB873374/885250/867282/873333, which upon restart, all the icons in the
desktop were gone including the 'start' icon (bottom left and task bar) All
the icons I put on the desktop were gone including the recycle bin. When I
right click the desktop, there was no response/dialogue box appearing. I
re-install not once, but twice, it give me similar end result for the pc
restart........... holy2 ..........man

Yes. Now and regularly. There are already several post-SP2
updates.

Did you slipstream you own copy of an XPSP2 CD? Or did you apply SP2
after installation? Did you use a store bought copy of XPsp2?

Try booting into safe mode, F8 after BIOS loads, but before Windows
does, and see if you get the desktop and other functions there. If you
can get into the Control Panel, go to Add/Remove Programs and and
uninstall the updates one at a time, and keeping track of which patch
you uninstall each time, and see if you get Windows to work that way.

When in safe mode, no luck it gives me a black page, can't go anywhere. The
only mistake I was to update a few patches each time, So hard to tell which
patch is causing the problem, thanks

There have been a few since SP2 came out. Go to IE Tools - Windows
Update and get the Critical ones

Hey Alex, Can you think of anything that can help this guy out?

He installed some of the updates, and now he has a blank desktop, same
in Safe Mode, and can't access anything.

Kurt, thanks for staying on top. If I were to try download one-by-one, at
some point I am going to hit the jackpot and back to square one. So cant go
thru that route. Really is to find out why is it causing the BLACK hole.
Re-install and it work what I have expected from XP. But not doing any
update at the moment. Living dangerously at the moment. (One thing I noticed
at shut down, it gives a back ground that I was not expecting, something
like overlapping icons) thanks

Are you using the video drivers that is installed during setup, or the
lastest ones from the video card manufacturer?

If you are using the latter, I would try that.

Display adaptor shows NIVIDIA riva tnt2 model 64/model64 pro (microsoft
corporation). Download another version( from driversguide) W9x-532.zip shows
that mine is already latest version.

This a link to nvidia drivers.

You should also check the website of your computer manufacturer and/or
computer component manufacturers for their latest drivers.

The ones installed with Windows are old, minimalistic, and can cause
many problems.

Many thanks for the link and it works very well. Acording to DM CREATIVE
AUDIO PCI ES1371,ES1373) WDM, do I have to open the casing or can I just
lookup for these ES1371,ES1373 and update it. Sorry to ask, just been a bit
lazy now.

And with the modem (the latest driver according to the manufacturer), guess
after that I should be able to do windows update... hopefully without any
problem, thanks

I understand about being lazy.

I might be the same driver, but I'm not sure on that.

It's video card drivers that MS uses that cause a lot of problems. The
other thing I would check is the chipset drivers for your motherboard.
But you would have to know what Brand, and model number, as there are
Many different combination of chipsets out there. Good Luck.

Open the box and the sound card read as " creative lab model CT4810" and the
CD given when I bought the pc 'CREATIVE VIBRA 128", Guess this is the one
"Driver release for SB PCI 128 Vibra / PCI 16 (Models CT 481x & 4740)
S128-DRV-W3-US "

On the chip set drivers, will open the box again later, tricky one I suppose
as you mention there are many combinations out there, thanks
