I noticed that other people, like me, were experiencing
problems with slow performance after installing the above
mentioned update. I got so sick of it, I uninstalled it
and, hey presto, my PC is back from the "possessed" state
its been in since the install. As far as I'm concerned
Microsoft can stick their updates from now on!

Then I suggest you permanently disconnect the computer from the
internet and any other network.
Also NEVER install anything.
You computer will become more susceptible to security issues and other
issues as the newly discovered weaknesses are left unprotected on your
computer.
The ostrich was not protected just because he buried his head in the
sand, and neither are you.

Or you could try a few things before you bury it to long:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
