Well your 'friend' knows nothing - most are perfectly compatible - I can run
7 year old Windows games perfectly happily under XP - I was replaying Broken
Sword 1 only last night.

No, it depends entirely on the game. Although many old games
won't work, others will. It depends on the game and whether it
accesses the hardware directly. Since many games do access the
hardware directly, those won't work, but it's *not* therefore
true of all old games.
Also note that there's no danger in trying. Either it will work
or not; it doesn't hurt anything to try an older game which fails
to work.
