Do you need SP2 in order to use Windows Messenger 5.1?

The Windows Messenger Download page (
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp ) points to the
full SP2 download, which I do not want or need (why is Microsoft
pointing you to this instead of to the Messenger download itself?).

However, the version information found at the Windows Download site (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8d9eb73-5f8c-4b9a-940f-9157a3b3d774&DisplayLang=en
) says SP1 is OK.

Which is correct?

Is there an advantage of v5.1 over the latest v4.7.2010 (KB887472)?

Is there an update as well for v5.1 similar to the KB mentioned above
once it is downloaded?

Thanks for your help.

Greetings,

Actually, the Windows Messenger page you linked to initially is for Windows Messenger 4.x,
which comes in SP2. Windows Messenger 5.x (which is considered a separate product) doesn't
actually have a web home besides the download center and will work just fine on SP1.

Thanks for the reply Jonathan.

For the second part of my question...any benefit to upgrading?

Hi,

If you're not using a Live Communications Server or Exchange Server, no, not really.
