windows xp explorer search companion is a blank screen

When I'm in Windows Explorer XP and I search for a file
or files I get a blank screen. In other words I don't get:

-> Pictures, music, or video
-> Documents(word processing, spreadsheets)
-> Computers or people
etc.

I have nothing to select there. Something has corrupted
my search companion. I have Norton virus protection and
there is no virus on my system. I have used windows
system restore but the problem continues. Does anybody
have a fix or idea what I can do to fix this problem?
