View Full Version : IE6 On WinXpSp2View>Source = NOTHING

Don I
February 16th 05, 10:48 PM
I'm not quite sure which group this belongs in as the problem could be in
Windows itself OR in IE so I'm going to post it in both with follow-ups
going to both.

Anyway, I've got WinXP SP2 and IE6 as my browswer.

For a couple of months now, when ever I click View>Source in IE6, NOTHING
happens. No program tries to start. There are no error messages of any
kind. Is there some kind of registry setting that needs to be entered to
re-enable this?

TIA

For all interested--I just found the following. I'm going to try it
tonight.

OK one of the things suggested at that link is to make sure it has the path to the correct editor in the registry. I went and looked--not only was the correct path not listed, but the key wasn't even there. I added it as directed and it still won't work. And I just noticed in IE that the "Edit" icon is greyed out.

The following is from the web page and my responses to each item are in red.

1.. Temporary Files Full
When the Internet Explorer disk cache becomes full it may stop the View Source function from working. To resolve, open Internet Explorer and click "Tools" > "Internet Options" > "Delete Files". I deleted the temp files.

2.. Cookie Folder Location
This issue can also occur if your Cookies folder is located on an NTFS partition and you do not have at least Change permissions for the Cookies folder. To resolve, make sure your account has sufficient permissions on the Cookies folder. I am the administrator and I have full priviledges. In addition, the other sites I visit use cookies without problems (both new cookies and existing cookies that get changed).

3.. Missing Notepad.exe
The View Source function uses Notepad to display the HTML, if "notepad.exe" is missing from the Windows directory then it will not work. To resolve, ensure a copy of Notepad.exe is in the Windows directory. Not Missing. It is there.

4.. Incomplete Page Download
If you press the ESC key before the page has completed loading then the "View Source" menu item may not be displayed. The page has completely downloaded. This has been happening for a couple of months and it doesn't matter what the website is.

5.. View Source Restriction
The View Source function may have been restricted by your Administrator. To resolve, see the "NoViewSource" registry value in Internet Explorer Restrictions. I visited the link and not only was this restriction not set, the "Restrictions" key didn't even exist. Here's the registry path it says to look at. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\
Restrictions]

6.. Invalid Temporary Directory
You may also receive this error if the path specified for the TMP environment variable is invalid. To resolve, make sure that the TEMP directory is a valid directory and that there is sufficient space on the drive. This directory is there and has one file (I just got through deleting temp files).

7.. Invalid View Source Program
If you have specified an alternate program to view the source code (see Use an Alternate Source Viewer with Internet Explorer). To resolve, make sure that the alternate viewer is valid and operational. I visited the link and the results are listed above. Here's the Registry Path it says to look at. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
View Source Editor\Editor Name] The "View Source Editor" key or any sub-keys don't even exist. I added this full path and it didn't work.

8.. Right-click disabled by Web Page
Some web pages may implement a restriction to stop visitors from right-clicking on the web page. The source may still be viewed by clicking the main "View" menu, then "Source". Not trying to right-click. Using View>Source in the menu bar. In addition, one of the web sites I've tried viewing the source on is my own and I don't have any such scripts loaded.

Don,
If you have a shortcut to notepad.exe on the desktop, rename it.

Go here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - line 183 on the
left column. Download the .reg file to your desktop. If you want to see
what it'll do to your registry, right click and choose Edit. Then right
click and choose Merge. HTH. If no joy, try the little program on line
183, right column. This is a trusted site, done by a fellow MS MVP.

I finally tried it last night (I ended up leaving for a trip to Ohio after
work instead of trying this). Still no joy :(

The weird thing is that if I goto WinExplorer and browse to an HTML file, I
can right click on it and click "Edit". It brings up WordPad (which I
assigned within the last few weeks--but View>Source hasn't worked for
MONTHS). So it's NOT like there isn't a default HTML editor.
