Sounds like faulty hardware. Start removing hardware one
by one that you can and see if it goes away. For instance
if you have two memory chips, remove one of them. Try a
different sound card if you have one laying around or use
the integrated one if there is one. Make sure all
hardware is firmly inserted. I had problems very similar
to what you are having and it turned out to be pitted
contacts where the memory snaps in.
