cannot install critical updates

I have been trying to install 2 critical updates for 2
days now without success. The download goes fine but the
installation fails every time, They are :
Q817287: (Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption
in Microsoft Windows)
811493: (Security Update (Windows XP)
I built this system myself about a year ago and have
never had a problem until yesterday. Have tried deleting
all temp files, have done a system restore, also deleted
the contents of the wutemp file and have redownlowed
update but still getting failed installation,. I have
also cleaned the registry. I have no idea what to try
next. Sure hope someone can help !

do not install 811493. there is a problem with this and possibly other
recent updates that microsoft are supposed to be aware of. keep an eye out
for more info in the newsgroup and on the update website.

I am having the same problem with update 811493 and
Q817287. I have emailed tech support and am planning to
call them in the morning to try to resolve this problem.
Both of these updates are downloaded but when I press
install, it only goes to 6mb and then stops and says that
the install failed and that I should rescan and try
again. I've done this about 7 times and it still won't
install.

I would recommend that you not install either of these updates until the
problems with them are resolved.
