My son has just received a new Dell Dimension computer with windows XP Pro
SP2 installed and has the Norton Ghost 9.0 program that he wants to install
also. I did some research and found a Symantec document that states: "you
need to
modify the windows XP Pro "Data Execution Prevention" policy and the
Boot.ini
file to allow Ghost to launch its service during startup." As I understand
it, if you don't make
this change, there will be blue screen error during bootup. Also, I could
be wrong, but
it appears that this document is incomplete as to the recommended changes

Has anyone recently had to work with this problem, and if so, any
suggestions? Would very much appreciate any comments. Sam.

I ran Ghost 9 (which is badged version of Drive Image) beofre installing SP2
I could not get Ghost 9 to work after installing SP2 probably because the
latter has a new version of Windows .inet.
The boot.ini modification would more easily done by editing boot.ini in
Windws BEFORE installing Ghost 9
I would recomment installing Acornis true image rather thna Ghost 9

That is a conditional Symantec support document last updated October 2004.
If the conditions do not occur, you do not need to follow the corrective
procedure.
I have Ghost 9 installed on a Windows XP Home SP-2 with no problems.
Symantec has a recent update for Ghost 9. After you install Ghost 9 suggest
you run Live Update. In Ghost 9, Live Update is located under Help. If you
have another Symantec product such as Norton Anti-virus, the Live Update in
that application will also find the update for Ghost 9. Second suggestion.
When you install the update for Ghost 9 and get to the point where you are
prompted to restart your computer, choose No and allow the update to
continue. Wait awhile {I waited one minute} and then restart the computer
to complete the update. The second suggestion avoid occasional incomplete
installation problems.

You can still use ghost from Norton 2003 System Work. I use it to
make a weekly backup.
Use the bootdisk if you have a floppy drive.

Don and Greg, thanks very much for your replies. What I am hoping for is
that the initial install of Ghost will not cause a Blue Screen problem on
the computer as mentioned in the applicable Symantec ID article. Probably I
will by phone, walk my son thru the procedure for the Boot.ini file
modification before he installs Ghost on his computer. I have the
PowerQuest V2i Protector Desktop Edition on my computer and it has been the
best backup program that I have ever used. Sure wish we could still
individually purchase this program. Thanks again, Sam.
